South African Law Reform Commission (SALRC)

The South African Law Reform Commission researches and recommends reform of the law. It was established under the South African Law Reform Commission Act, 1973 (Act No. 19 of 1973), and its members are appointed by the President, chaired by a judge.
Its task is to conduct research on all branches of the law of South Africa and to make recommendations for the development, improvement, modernisation and reform of the law, including the repeal of obsolete or unnecessary provisions, the removal of anomalies, and the bringing of legislation into line with the Constitution.
It works through a published programme of investigations, issuing issue papers, discussion papers and reports for public comment before making final recommendations. Its reports, which usually include draft legislation, have shaped reform in areas including customary law, sexual offences, domestic violence and the law of succession.
