The South African Local Government Association represents organised local government. It is recognised under the Organised Local Government Act, 1997, and is the body through which local government participates in the National Council of Provinces and in intergovernmental structures.
It is a voluntary membership association of all 257 municipalities, governed by them, and it acts as their employer body in collective bargaining through the South African Local Government Bargaining Council.
Its functions include representing municipal interests in national policy and legislative processes, supporting capacity building, and providing advice and knowledge sharing across municipalities. It is funded largely by membership levies from municipalities.
