South African National Parks manages the national park system, operating under the National Environmental Management: Protected Areas Act, 2003 (Act No. 57 of 2003).
It manages a network of national parks covering roughly four million hectares, including the Kruger National Park, Table Mountain, Addo Elephant, Kgalagadi Transfrontier, Karoo, Augrabies Falls, Golden Gate Highlands, Namaqua and the Garden Route National Park. Its mandate covers biodiversity conservation, the sustainable use of protected areas, and constituency building.
It earns a substantial share of its income from tourism, through park entry fees, accommodation and concessions, which cross-subsidises conservation work in parks that attract fewer visitors. Its conservation challenges include rhino poaching, invasive species and climate adaptation. It reports to the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment.
