South African State Theatre

The South African State Theatre is a national performing arts institution in central Pretoria. It opened in 1981 and, like other state theatres of that era, served a segregated audience before being repositioned after 1994.
It operates several venues of differing capacity within a single complex, staging drama, dance, opera, music and children’s theatre. Its programming includes work in indigenous languages and an emphasis on developing new South African writing and performance.
It runs incubation and residency programmes for emerging companies and practitioners, and hosts festivals including its annual celebration of township and community theatre. It reports to the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture.
