uMngeni-uThukela Water is the bulk water utility serving KwaZulu-Natal. It was formed in 2023 when uMngeni Water and uThukela Water were amalgamated, extending the entity’s service area across a much larger part of the province.
It abstracts, stores and treats raw water and supplies it in bulk to municipalities, which distribute it to households and businesses. Its infrastructure includes dams, treatment works, pump stations, aqueducts and reservoirs serving eThekwini and the surrounding districts.
It operates as a water board under the Water Services Act and reports to the Department of Water and Sanitation. Its supply area includes regions repeatedly affected by drought and by the flood damage of 2022.
