The Engineering Council of South Africa regulates the engineering profession. It operates under the Engineering Profession Act, 2000 (Act No. 46 of 2000), and is one of the six councils coordinated by the Council for the Built Environment.
It registers professional engineers, engineering technologists, technicians and certificated engineers, accredits engineering education programmes, and sets the standards of competence required for registration.
Its accreditation carries international recognition through the Washington, Sydney and Dublin Accords, which provide for mutual recognition of engineering qualifications between signatory countries. It also exercises disciplinary jurisdiction over registered persons and identifies engineering work that may only be performed by registered practitioners.
