The Council for the Built Environment is the overarching body coordinating the six statutory councils that regulate the built environment professions. It was established under the Council for the Built Environment Act, 2000 (Act No. 43 of 2000).

The professional councils under it regulate architecture, engineering, landscape architecture, project and construction management, property valuation, and quantity surveying. The Council promotes consistency between them, advises government on built environment policy, and identifies work reserved for particular professions.

It also promotes transformation of the professions, oversees the accreditation of built environment education programmes in conjunction with the councils, and handles appeals against council decisions. It reports to the Department of Public Works and Infrastructure.
