Export Credit Insurance Corporation of South Africa (ECIC)

Public Entity · Economic Infrastructure and Development · reports to Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (the dtic)

The Export Credit Insurance Corporation of South Africa provides political and commercial risk insurance to South African exporters and to lenders financing export transactions. It operates under the Export Credit and Foreign Investments Insurance Act, 1957 (Act No. 78 of 1957).

It underwrites medium and long-term export credit, principally for capital goods and project exports into the rest of Africa and other emerging markets, covering risks that commercial insurers will not carry. Its cover is backed by government, which allows it to support transactions that would otherwise not be financeable.

By insuring these risks it enables South African exporters to compete for large infrastructure and capital projects abroad. It reports to the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition.
