The Department of Trade, Industry and Competition leads South Africa’s industrial policy, trade negotiations and competition policy. It was formed in 2019 by merging the Department of Trade and Industry with the Economic Development Department.
It develops and implements industrial policy, administers trade agreements and export promotion, and runs incentive schemes for manufacturing, agro-processing, the automotive sector and business process services. It also carries responsibility for the competition and consumer protection regimes, and for broad-based black economic empowerment policy.
Its portfolio is one of the largest in government and includes the Industrial Development Corporation, the Competition Commission and Competition Tribunal, the National Consumer Commission, the Companies and Intellectual Property Commission, the South African Bureau of Standards and the National Regulator for Compulsory Specifications.
