The HWSETA is the sector education and training authority for the health and social development sectors, established under the Skills Development Act, 1998.
Its scope covers public and private health services, medical and dental practices, pharmaceuticals, veterinary services, laboratories, emergency medical services, and the social development and non-profit welfare sector including child care and services to older persons and people with disabilities.
It develops the sector skills plan, funds learnerships, bursaries, internships and skills programmes, and accredits training providers. Its work includes addressing scarce skills in nursing, emergency care and community health, and supporting the training pipeline for the non-profit welfare organisations that deliver much of the country’s social service provision.
