Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET)
National Department · Social Services
The Department of Higher Education and Training is responsible for post-school education and training, covering universities, technical and vocational education and training colleges, community education and training colleges, and the skills development system.
It was established in 2009 when the former Department of Education was split. Unlike schooling, post-school education is an exclusive national competence, so the department funds and oversees institutions directly rather than through provinces.
It oversees 26 public universities, 50 TVET colleges and the community education and training system, and administers the National Skills Fund and the 21 Sector Education and Training Authorities. The National Student Financial Aid Scheme, the Council on Higher Education and the South African Qualifications Authority report to it.
