Lovedale TVET College is a public technical and vocational education and training college in the Eastern Cape, operating three campuses: Alice, King and Zwelitsha.
Its Alice campus stands on the site of one of the oldest educational institutions in Southern Africa. Lovedale began as a mission station founded in 1824 by John Bennie of the Glasgow Missionary Society and named after Dr John Love, the society’s secretary; it was formally constituted as a college in 1841. Its original curriculum combined academic subjects with practical training in agriculture and carpentry.
Lovedale was among the first institutions in South Africa to offer higher education to black students, and educated figures including Tiyo Soga, Steve Biko and Thabo Mbeki. The modern college continues in the vocational tradition, offering NATED and National Certificate Vocational programmes.
