The National Nuclear Regulator provides for the protection of people, property and the environment against nuclear damage. It was established under the National Nuclear Regulator Act, 1999 (Act No. 47 of 1999).
It licenses and regulates nuclear installations including the Koeberg nuclear power station, the SAFARI-1 research reactor at Pelindaba and associated fuel and waste facilities. It also regulates the mining and processing of radioactive ores, and the transport of radioactive material.
Its functions include setting safety standards, inspection and enforcement, emergency preparedness requirements, and public assurance on nuclear safety. It is independent of the operators it regulates and of the promotion of nuclear energy.
