The Department of Electricity and Energy is responsible for the security of South Africa’s energy supply and for electricity policy, planning and procurement.
It was established in June 2024, in the seventh administration, by combining the electricity responsibilities previously held by a Minister in the Presidency with the energy functions of the former Department of Mineral Resources and Energy. Kgosientsho Ramokgopa was appointed its first Minister on 3 July 2024.
The department oversees electricity planning and new generation capacity procurement under the Electricity Regulation Act, the Integrated Resource Plan, the Energy Action Plan aimed at ending load shedding, and the wider transition of the electricity sector. The National Energy Regulator of South Africa, the South African Nuclear Energy Corporation, the National Nuclear Regulator, the Central Energy Fund and Eskom fall within the electricity and energy portfolio.
