National Radioactive Waste Disposal Institute (NRWDI)

Public Entity · Economic Infrastructure and Development · reports to Department of Electricity and Energy (DEE)

The National Radioactive Waste Disposal Institute manages the disposal of radioactive waste on a national basis. It was established under the National Radioactive Waste Disposal Institute Act, 2008 (Act No. 53 of 2008).

Its creation separated the disposal function from the generators of waste, so that long-term disposal is managed independently of the operators whose activities produce it. It operates the Vaalputs national radioactive waste disposal facility in the Northern Cape, which receives low and intermediate level waste.

Its responsibilities include site selection and assessment for future facilities, managing disposal operations, and planning for the eventual disposal of high-level waste and spent fuel. It reports within the electricity and energy portfolio.
