National Regulator for Compulsory Specifications (NRCS)

The National Regulator for Compulsory Specifications administers and enforces compulsory specifications and technical regulations. It was established under the National Regulator for Compulsory Specifications Act, 2008 (Act No. 5 of 2008).
It was created when the regulatory function was separated from the South African Bureau of Standards, so that the body writing voluntary standards would not also police mandatory ones.
It regulates products where health, safety, environmental protection or fair trade require it, including automotive components, electrical appliances, building materials, chemicals, food and gaming equipment. It approves products before they enter the market, inspects at ports and in the market, and administers the legal metrology system governing measuring instruments used in trade.
