Ombud Council

Public Entity · Finance and Administration Services · reports to National Treasury

The Ombud Council oversees the financial sector ombud system. It was established under the Financial Sector Regulation Act, 2017 (Act No. 9 of 2017).

Its purpose is to ensure that financial customers have access to, and are able to use, affordable, effective, independent and fair alternative dispute resolution processes. It recognises industry ombud schemes, sets requirements for their governance and processes, and coordinates the system so that complaints reach the right forum.

Statutory ombuds within the system include the Pension Funds Adjudicator and the FAIS Ombud. Its establishment addressed long-standing fragmentation, where consumers faced a confusing array of separate schemes with differing standards.
