Onderstepoort Biological Products (OBP)
Public Entity · Economic Infrastructure and Development · reports to Department of Agriculture (DoA)
Onderstepoort Biological Products manufactures animal vaccines. It was established under the Onderstepoort Biological Products Incorporation Act, 1999 (Act No. 19 of 1999), having previously formed part of the Onderstepoort Veterinary Institute.
It produces vaccines against livestock diseases endemic to Southern Africa, including African horse sickness, bluetongue, Rift Valley fever, lumpy skin disease and anthrax. For several of these it is one of very few producers worldwide, which gives it strategic significance for regional animal health.
Its vaccines protect the livestock on which both commercial and subsistence farming depend, and it supplies markets across Africa and beyond. It reports to the Department of Agriculture.
