The Department of Agriculture is responsible for agricultural production, food security and the regulation of plant and animal health.

It became a standalone department in 2024, when the former Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development was divided into separate agriculture and land reform portfolios in the seventh administration. John Steenhuisen was appointed Minister of Agriculture on 3 July 2024.

Its functions include agricultural production and producer support, veterinary services and animal disease control, plant health and biosecurity, food safety regulation, agricultural trade access, and support to smallholder and emerging farmers. The Agricultural Research Council, the Perishable Products Export Control Board, the National Agricultural Marketing Council and the Onderstepoort Biological Products company fall within the portfolio.
