Rhodes University is a public university in Makhanda in the Eastern Cape, founded in 1904 as Rhodes University College. It is the smallest of South Africa’s traditional universities by enrolment.
It teaches across six faculties: Commerce, Education, Humanities, Law, Pharmacy and Science. Its residential character and small size are central to its model, with a high proportion of students living in university residences.
It is particularly known for its School of Journalism and Media Studies, which is among the oldest in Africa, and for the Institute for Water Research and its work in ichthyology and freshwater biodiversity. The town in which it sits was renamed from Grahamstown to Makhanda in 2018.
