South African National Accreditation System (SANAS)
Public Entity · Economic Infrastructure and Development · reports to Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (the dtic)
The South African National Accreditation System is the sole national accreditation body. It operates under the Accreditation for Conformity Assessment, Calibration and Good Laboratory Practice Act, 2006 (Act No. 19 of 2006).
It accredits laboratories, certification bodies, inspection bodies and verification bodies, assessing their technical competence against international standards. Accreditation provides formal recognition that a body is competent to carry out specific tests, calibrations or certifications.
Its accreditation is recognised internationally through mutual recognition arrangements, which means test and calibration results issued by SANAS-accredited bodies are accepted in other member economies. This supports exports by reducing the need for retesting abroad. It reports to the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition.
