South African Nursing Council (SANC)

The South African Nursing Council is the statutory body responsible for setting and maintaining standards of nursing education and practice in South Africa. It is autonomous and financially independent, funded by the profession it regulates rather than by appropriation.
The Council was first established under the Nursing Act of 1944 and now operates under the Nursing Act, 2005 (Act No. 33 of 2005). Section 3 of that Act charges it with establishing, improving and controlling the conditions, standards and quality of nursing education and training.
Its functions under Section 4 include accrediting and inspecting nursing education institutions, monitoring assessments those institutions conduct, holding nursing examinations, and issuing diplomas and certificates. The Council maintains the register of practitioners and exercises disciplinary jurisdiction over professional conduct, with the protection of the public as its governing purpose.
