The Department of Health provides leadership and coordination for South Africa’s health system, working towards the constitutional right of access to health care services.

Health is a concurrent national and provincial function. The national department sets policy, norms and standards, and legislation, while the nine provincial departments deliver most services through clinics, community health centres and hospitals. National programmes include HIV, tuberculosis and communicable disease control, maternal and child health, non-communicable diseases, and emergency medical services.

The department is also responsible for preparing the health system for National Health Insurance. Entities reporting to it include the South African Health Products Regulatory Authority, the National Health Laboratory Service, the Council for Medical Schemes and the Office of Health Standards Compliance.
