The South African Qualifications Authority oversees the National Qualifications Framework. It operates under the National Qualifications Framework Act, 2008 (Act No. 67 of 2008).
It advances the objectives of the Framework, oversees its further development and implementation, and coordinates the three quality councils responsible for its sub-frameworks: the Council on Higher Education, Umalusi, and the Quality Council for Trades and Occupations.
It registers qualifications and part-qualifications on the Framework, maintains the National Learners’ Records Database, and evaluates foreign qualifications for recognition in South Africa. It also recognises professional bodies and registers their designations.
