South African Social Security Agency (SASSA)

Public Entity · Social Services · reports to Department of Social Development (DSD)

The South African Social Security Agency administers and pays social grants. It was established under the South African Social Security Agency Act, 2004 (Act No. 9 of 2004), to bring grant administration under a single national agency, replacing the provincial systems that preceded it.

It assesses applications, maintains the beneficiary system and disburses payments for the older person’s grant, the disability grant, the child support grant, the foster child grant, the care dependency grant, the grant-in-aid and the war veteran’s grant. It also administers social relief of distress.

It pays grants to a very large share of South African households each month, making it one of the largest social protection administrations in the developing world. It administered the COVID-19 Social Relief of Distress grant, which was subsequently extended. It reports to the Department of Social Development.
