South African Veterinary Council (SAVC)
Public Entity · Economic Infrastructure and Development · reports to Department of Agriculture (DoA)
The South African Veterinary Council regulates the veterinary and para-veterinary professions. It operates under the Veterinary and Para-Veterinary Professions Act, 1982 (Act No. 19 of 1982).
It registers veterinarians and para-veterinary professionals including veterinary nurses, animal health technicians, laboratory technologists and physiotherapists, and registration is a precondition for lawful practice.
It accredits veterinary education programmes, sets and enforces rules of professional conduct, and exercises disciplinary jurisdiction. It also authorises the facilities from which veterinary practice may be conducted. Its work protects both animal welfare and public health, given the role of veterinarians in food safety and in the control of diseases transmissible to humans.
