The University of the Free State is a public university in Bloemfontein, founded in 1904 as the Grey University College.
It teaches across seven faculties: Economic and Management Sciences, Education, Health Sciences, Humanities, Law, Natural and Agricultural Sciences, and Theology and Religion. It operates three campuses: the main Bloemfontein campus, the South Campus also in Bloemfontein, and the Qwaqwa campus in the eastern Free State.
The university teaches in English, Afrikaans and Sesotho, and its language policy has been a significant institutional issue. Its research strengths include agriculture and food security, water management, and health sciences linked to the Universitas academic hospital.
