The Department of Military Veterans provides benefits and support to South Africa’s military veterans and their dependants. It was established under the Military Veterans Act, 2011 (Act No. 18 of 2011), and shares a ministry with the Department of Defence.
A military veteran is defined in the Act as a person who rendered military service to any of the statutory or non-statutory military organisations involved on all sides of South Africa’s liberation war before 1994, or who served in the Union Defence Force before 1961, or who became a member of the South African National Defence Force and has completed military training and is no longer serving.
The benefits provided for include health care, education support, housing, pensions, subsidised public transport, business support and burial support. The department maintains the national military veterans database on which access to these benefits depends.
