The Department of Defence provides, manages and employs defence capabilities to defend and protect South Africa, its territorial integrity and its people, in accordance with Chapter 11 of the Constitution and the Defence Act, 2002 (Act No. 42 of 2002).
It comprises the Defence Secretariat, which provides civilian oversight, policy advice and departmental administration, and the South African National Defence Force, which comprises the SA Army, the SA Air Force, the SA Navy and the SA Military Health Service.
Beyond territorial defence, the SANDF supports the police in maintaining law and order when called upon, participates in peace support operations across the continent, and provides disaster relief and humanitarian assistance. Armscor and the Castle Control Board fall within the portfolio.
