The Agricultural Produce Agents Council regulates agents who trade in agricultural produce on behalf of producers. It operates under the Agricultural Produce Agents Act, 1992 (Act No. 12 of 1992).
It registers fresh produce agents operating on the national fresh produce markets, export agents and livestock agents. Registration is compulsory, and agents must meet prescribed standards of conduct and account properly for the proceeds of produce sold on a producer’s behalf.
It administers a fidelity fund that compensates producers for losses caused by an agent’s theft of trust money, inspects agents’ trust accounts, and exercises disciplinary jurisdiction. Its role matters because producers deliver perishable goods to agents before payment. It reports to the Department of Agriculture.
