The Agricultural Research Council is the principal agricultural research institution in South Africa, established under the Agricultural Research Act, 1990 (Act No. 86 of 1990).

Its mandate is to conduct research, drive technology development and transfer knowledge in order to promote agriculture and industry, contribute to a better quality of life, and facilitate natural resource conservation.

It operates a network of research campuses and experimental farms covering field crops, horticulture, animal production, veterinary science, soil, climate and water, and agricultural engineering. Its Onderstepoort Veterinary Research campus works on animal diseases including foot and mouth disease and African horse sickness, and it maintains national genebanks for plant and animal genetic resources. It reports to the Department of Agriculture.
