Armscor is the acquisition agency for the South African Department of Defence, operating under the Armaments Corporation of South Africa, Limited Act, 2003 (Act No. 51 of 2003).
Its mandate is to meet the defence matériel requirements of the Department of Defence effectively, efficiently and economically. It manages defence acquisition programmes, tendering and contracting, and provides technology, research, development, analysis and test facilities in support of them.
It operates specialist facilities including Gerotek vehicle test facilities, Alkantpan ballistic test range, the Institute for Maritime Technology, Ergonomics Technologies and Protechnik Laboratories. It also manages the disposal of surplus defence equipment and administers defence industrial participation obligations. Its manufacturing functions were separated into Denel in 1992.
