The Castle Control Board manages the Castle of Good Hope in Cape Town. It operates under the Castle Management Act, 1993 (Act No. 207 of 1993).
The Castle, built by the Dutch East India Company between 1666 and 1679, is the oldest surviving colonial building in South Africa and a declared national monument. It remains state property under the Department of Defence.
The Board’s mandate is to preserve and protect the military and cultural heritage of the Castle, to maximise its tourism potential, and to optimise its accessibility to the public. Its interpretation of the site has broadened to address the history of slavery, imprisonment and dispossession associated with it, alongside its military past.
