CHIETA is the sector education and training authority for the chemical industries, established under the Skills Development Act, 1998 and funded by the skills development levy.

Its scope spans a wide set of subsectors including petroleum and base chemicals, speciality chemicals, explosives and fertilisers, pharmaceuticals, glass, plastics fabrication, surface coatings, and fast-moving consumer goods manufacturing.

It develops the sector skills plan, funds learnerships, apprenticeships, internships and bursaries, and supports artisan development in process and chemical operations trades. Its work includes smart skills centres providing access to training in under-served areas, and skills planning for the sector’s shift towards greener chemistry and hydrogen.
