The Companies and Intellectual Property Commission registers companies and intellectual property rights in South Africa. It was established under the Companies Act, 2008 (Act No. 71 of 2008), consolidating the former companies office and the patents and trade marks office.
It registers companies, close corporations and co-operatives, maintains the companies register, and receives annual returns and financial statements. On the intellectual property side it registers trade marks, patents, designs and copyright in films.
It also enforces compliance with the Companies Act, investigates complaints, and maintains the register of disqualified directors. It reports to the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition.
