Compensation Fund (CF)

The Compensation Fund compensates workers who are injured, contract a disease, or die in the course of their employment. It operates under the Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases Act, 1993 (Act No. 130 of 1993), and falls under the Department of Employment and Labour.
Employers pay an annual assessment based on their payroll and the risk of their industry, and in return employees give up the right to sue the employer for damages arising from a workplace injury. Benefits cover medical costs, temporary and permanent disability, and pensions to dependants of workers who die.
The fund’s claims administration and financial reporting have been the subject of sustained adverse audit findings. It reports to the Department of Employment and Labour, alongside the separate Compensation Commissioner for Occupational Diseases which deals with mine workers.
