The Department of Employment and Labour regulates the South African labour market and works to improve employment and working conditions.
It administers the core labour statutes, including the Labour Relations Act, the Basic Conditions of Employment Act, the Employment Equity Act and the Occupational Health and Safety Act. Its inspectorate enforces workplace standards, and it sets sectoral determinations and administers the national minimum wage.
The department runs public employment services and Labour Centres, and oversees the Unemployment Insurance Fund and the Compensation Fund. The Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration, Productivity SA, the National Economic Development and Labour Council and Supported Employment Enterprises report to it.
