The Construction Industry Development Board promotes and regulates the construction industry. It was established under the Construction Industry Development Board Act, 2000 (Act No. 38 of 2000).

It maintains the Register of Contractors, which grades contractors by financial and works capability, determining the size of public sector contract they may tender for. Registration is compulsory for contractors undertaking public sector work.

It also maintains the Register of Projects, sets standards for procurement and contract documentation in public construction, monitors industry performance and payment practices, and runs contractor development programmes. It reports to the Department of Public Works and Infrastructure.
