CATHSSETA is the sector education and training authority for culture, arts, tourism, hospitality and sport, established under the Skills Development Act, 1998.
It covers six subsectors: arts culture and heritage; conservation; gaming and lotteries; hospitality; sport recreation and fitness; and tourism and travel services. These are largely service industries with a high proportion of small enterprises and seasonal employment.
It develops the sector skills plan, funds learnerships, internships, bursaries and skills programmes, and accredits training providers delivering its qualifications. Tourism and hospitality skills development is a particular focus given the sector’s labour intensity and its role in employment for young people and in rural areas.
