Denel SOC Ltd
Public Entity · Justice and Protection Services · reports to Department of Defence (DoD)
Denel is South Africa’s state-owned defence and aerospace manufacturer, created in 1992 when the manufacturing arms of Armscor were separated into a commercial company.
It designs and manufactures artillery systems, guided weapons, armoured vehicles, munitions and aerostructures, and provides maintenance and overhaul services. Its business units have included Denel Dynamics, Denel Land Systems, Rheinmetall Denel Munition as a joint venture, and Denel Aeronautics.
The company suffered a severe financial and operational collapse, losing skills and defaulting on obligations including employee salaries, and has been the subject of a turnaround plan supported by government recapitalisation and the disposal of non-core assets. It reports through the defence portfolio, distinct from Armscor, which is the acquisition agency for the Department of Defence.
