Eskom is South Africa’s national electricity utility and generates the large majority of the electricity used in the country. It is a state-owned company wholly held by government, established in 1923 as the Electricity Supply Commission and converted to a public company under the Eskom Conversion Act, 2001.
It generates electricity mainly from a fleet of coal-fired power stations, supplemented by nuclear generation at Koeberg, pumped storage, hydro, gas turbines and a growing renewable component. It owns and operates the national transmission grid and distributes electricity directly to some customers, with municipalities distributing to most others.
The utility has been at the centre of South Africa’s electricity supply crisis, and its restructuring under the Electricity Regulation Amendment Act separates it into generation, transmission and distribution businesses, with the National Transmission Company South Africa established as a subsidiary. Government has provided substantial debt relief through the Eskom Debt Relief Act. Its tariffs are approved by the National Energy Regulator of South Africa.
