The Health Professions Council of South Africa regulates health practitioners other than nurses, pharmacists and those covered by separate councils. It operates under the Health Professions Act, 1974 (Act No. 56 of 1974).
It registers practitioners across twelve professional boards covering medicine and dentistry, psychology, physiotherapy, radiography, occupational therapy, dietetics, optometry, speech therapy and audiology, emergency care, environmental health, medical technology and others.
Its functions include setting education and training standards, accrediting programmes, maintaining the registers on which lawful practice depends, and exercising disciplinary jurisdiction over professional conduct. Its governing purpose is the protection of the public and the guidance of the professions.
