The Industrial Development Corporation is a national development finance institution that funds industrial capacity in South Africa and the rest of the continent. It was established under the Industrial Development Corporation Act, 1940 (Act No. 22 of 1940), and is wholly owned by government.
It provides debt, equity, quasi-equity and guarantees to industrial projects, concentrating on manufacturing, mining and beneficiation, agro-processing, green energy, and the automotive and chemicals sectors. It is self-financing, funding its activities from returns on its investment portfolio and from borrowing rather than from transfers.
Its mandate includes creating employment, supporting black industrialists and developing entrepreneurship, and it takes on projects that commercial lenders regard as too risky. It reports to the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition.
