The LGSETA is the sector education and training authority for local government, established under the Skills Development Act, 1998.
Its constituency is South Africa’s 257 municipalities together with organised local government and related bodies. Municipal capacity is a recognised constraint on service delivery, which gives its skills development mandate particular weight.
It develops the sector skills plan and funds learnerships, internships, bursaries and skills programmes for municipal employees and councillors. Its priorities include technical and engineering skills for water, sanitation, electricity and roads, municipal financial management competencies required under the Municipal Finance Management Act, and governance training for councillors.
