Mining Qualifications Authority (MQA)

SETA · Social Services · reports to Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET)

The Mining Qualifications Authority is the sector education and training authority for mining and minerals, established under the Skills Development Act, 1998 and also constituted under the Mine Health and Safety Act, 1996.

Its dual statutory basis is distinctive: alongside the standard SETA functions it carries a specific mandate for mine health and safety training standards, reflecting the risk profile of underground and surface mining work.

It develops the sector skills plan, funds learnerships, apprenticeships, bursaries and internships, and supports artisan and technician development for the industry. It also funds training for mine community members and for employees affected by retrenchment, and supports research into occupational health and safety in mining.
