The National Agricultural Marketing Council advises the Minister on agricultural marketing. It was established under the Marketing of Agricultural Products Act, 1996 (Act No. 47 of 1996).
The Act dismantled the control board system that had governed agricultural marketing, and the Council was created to advise on the residual regulatory measures and on the functioning of agricultural markets.
It investigates and recommends on statutory measures including levies, records and returns, and registration in agricultural industries, and it monitors the effect of those measures. It also conducts research on food price trends, market access for smallholder farmers, and the competitiveness of agricultural value chains. It reports to the Department of Agriculture.
