The National Institute for the Humanities and Social Sciences supports and promotes scholarship in the humanities and social sciences. It was established in 2013 following a ministerial charter that identified the decline of these disciplines relative to the natural sciences as a national concern.
It funds doctoral scholarships and supports doctoral schools that bring together postgraduate students across universities. It also supports scholarly publishing, including a book development programme, and runs the annual Humanities and Social Sciences Awards.
It administers the African Pathways Programme, which supports postgraduate mobility and collaboration across the continent, and reports to the Department of Higher Education and Training.
