The National Lotteries Commission regulates the National Lottery and other lotteries in South Africa, and administers the distribution of lottery proceeds to good causes. It operates under the Lotteries Act, 1997 (Act No. 57 of 1997), as amended.
It licenses and oversees the operator of the National Lottery, regulates society lotteries and promotional competitions, and works to prevent unlawful lotteries. A portion of ticket sales flows to the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund, from which grants are made to charities, arts culture and national heritage, sport and recreation, and other good causes through distributing agencies.
Its grant-making has been the subject of a Special Investigating Unit investigation into misappropriated funding, and subsequent governance and process reforms. It reports to the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition.
