The National Metrology Institute of South Africa maintains the national measurement standards. It was established under the Measurement Units and Measurement Standards Act, 2006 (Act No. 18 of 2006).
It realises and maintains the national measurement standards for the base and derived units of the International System of Units, and disseminates them through calibration services so that measurements made in South Africa are traceable to international standards.
This traceability underpins trade, manufacturing quality, legal metrology, health care and environmental monitoring. It also produces certified reference materials and participates in international comparisons that establish the equivalence of national standards. It reports to the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition.
