The Office of Health Standards Compliance monitors and enforces compliance with health standards in health establishments. It was established under the National Health Amendment Act, 2013.

It inspects public and private hospitals, clinics and other health establishments against the National Core Standards, certifies those that comply, and may issue compliance notices or recommend enforcement action against those that do not. Its inspection findings are published.

It also houses the Health Ombud, an independent office that investigates serious complaints about health establishments. The Ombud’s investigation into the deaths of psychiatric patients transferred from Life Esidimeni was among the most significant health accountability investigations in the country’s history.
